Burnout: Exhaustion and Resistance? A conversation

If we don’t have any time to relax, maybe at some point something will force us from within to take time-out. Nowadays it’s called Burnout—and it is much discussed. Also here with us …

The diagnosis of burnout is inextricably linked to our times—it seems to have become so omnipresent at work that one almost becomes suspicious. Certainly, burnout is not a strategy but an illness, a kind of physical-emotional surrender in the face of the demands of the present world. The pressure is a time pressure, a situation of constantly looming deadlines, the endless speed and the perceived or actual precariousness of one’s own situation. You could say that the individual with burnout seeks the right to regain their own time. So could it be that Burnout is in reality a diagnosis of our society? Or are other forms of suffering not specific to our times, like depression, concealed behind it?

We will discuss these issues with the psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Joachim Küchenhoff and the sociologist Diana Lindner. The discussion will be moderated by Christian Grüny.
